Sagittal Appliance
The Sagittal Appliance is an orthodontic device used primarily to correct issues related to the alignment of the upper and lower jaws. It is especially effective in treating sagittal discrepancies, which are misalignments in the forward and backward positioning of the jaws, such as overbites and underbites.

Key Features:

2 Screws (One on Each Side of Palate in Cuspid Area): The Sagittal Appliance typically includes two screws that are positioned in the cuspid (canine) area of the palate. These screws are used to apply pressure to the upper arch and create controlled expansion or movement of the jaw. By turning the screws, the orthodontist can adjust the appliance to gradually move the teeth and/or jaw into a more ideal position. This feature allows for precise adjustments over time to correct sagittal imbalances.

Acrylic Palate: The device features an acrylic palate that covers the roof of the mouth. The acrylic is custom-molded to fit the patient’s mouth and serves as the base structure for the appliance. This palate holds the screws in place and provides stability while the appliance is in use. It also ensures that the screws are properly positioned to apply the desired forces to the teeth and jaw.

Clasps for Retention (Doctor’s Preference): Retention clasps are an optional feature in the Sagittal Appliance, depending on the doctor’s preference. These clasps help to keep the appliance securely in place, especially when additional retention is needed. They can be placed on the molars or other teeth, depending on the design and the specific needs of the patient. The clasps help ensure that the appliance stays in position during treatment, providing consistent pressure and allowing for effective corrections.

The Sagittal Appliance is particularly effective for correcting class II or class III malocclusions, such as overbites and underbites, by adjusting the positioning of the teeth and jaw. The use of screws allows for gradual expansion or retraction of the upper jaw, depending on the specific needs of the patient. The acrylic palate provides a stable base for the appliance, while the clasps help with retention and secure fitting.
